| Appearance | The sapwood is white with a red-to-brown cast. The heartwood ranges from a light reddish-brown to a dark, chocolate brown. The grain is usually not pronounced. But some material, called birdseye, has unusual figuring in its grain that makes it appear to be three-dimensional. |
